I am serious about my 'diet' and do not eat ‘carbs’. I follow a strict protein and veg/salad diet-can I still compete?

If you are serious about your diet and body image, you surely do some exercise already; therefore you will have an idea on how your body responds to no ‘carbs’ and training. Carbs are found in veg and salad, depending which ones and the amounts, therefore, you may find you eat sufficient carbs already. However, it would be advisable to consult a dietician or speak to a personal trainer if you have absolutely no carbs and still would like to compete in a triathlon.

Where can I get a training program for a sprint triathlon?

This all depends on what level you are looking for. If you just want to finish a race then try find a friend who does triathlons already and get some tips and ideas on how much and what to train each week. The internet is also a good resource here. If you are serious about the racing and looking for a top finish, there are a few coaches in South Africa and would be advisable to sit down with a coach and work out the best plan for yourself.

How long before a sprint (BSG/Energade) race do I need to start training?

All depends on your previous and current level of physical fitness/activity. If, for example, you already do a few runs a week to stay fit and have done some swimming before, then to pick up the training roughly 6-8 weeks before a race will be able to get you to the finish line. If you are not doing a lot of exercise or haven’t done much before, it would be advisable to team up with a few mates and do your strength in the race. Try a race early on in the Calendar and if you get ‘hooked’ then you can certainly do a full sprint race or even two legs in the race by the end of the race calendar.
